Fantasy Football Rankings 2018: Top 20 players at each position
By Donnie Druin
Quarterbacks
1. Aaron Rodgers
Despite coming off a season-ending injury in 2017, Rodgers remains the top quarterback thanks to his ability to do everything and then some. Losing Jordy Nelson will hurt, but the addition of Jimmy Graham can be a big pay-off.
2. Russell Wilson
With no formidable rushing attack in sight, Wilson is nearly a lock to replicate the fantasy success he’s shown the last few seasons due to a strong connection with Doug Baldwin, and having to create plays with his feet.
3. Tom Brady
As long as Tom Brady has Bill Belichick and Rob Gronkowski, he’s going to be at worst a top-3 quarterback. Brady’s talents + system = a steady slew of points no matter who’s on the field.
4. Drew Brees
Many have Brees outside of the top five, and that’s understandable given the slight regression we saw in 2017. However as long as Brees is still in New Orleans with the talented supporting cast he has, it’s hard to imagine he finishes worse than the year prior.
5. Carson Wentz
Wentz was well on his way to winning MVP last season before an unfortunate ACL injury sidelined him. When Wentz is at full health, he’s undoubtedly one of the best fantasy QBs…We’ll keep a close eye on his health as the season draws closer.
6. Deshaun Watson
Much like Wentz, Watson was running rampant with the small portion of play we got from him. Similar to the QB above him, when healthy he’s seemingly unstoppable. Should he return to form with the ever-so-dangerous DeAndre Hopkins, the rest of the league will be on stand-by.
7. Andrew Luck
Looks like we’ve run into a trend here. Luck, at his peak, put up phenomenal numbers and was able to get it done on the ground as well. The shoulder situation is certainly a scary one, but from his preseason debut, Luck looks fully healthy again. It’s a coin flip, but we’ll aid on the optimistic side of potential this year.
8. Matt Ryan
We know for a fact Matt Ryan won’t be drafted on Jalen Ramsey’s team, but that shouldn’t stop you from taking Ryan if the situation is right. Ryan’s digression is 2017 was noteworthy, but with time under the new system, we’ll take the upside of Julio Jones on the receiving end of his passes.
9. Matthew Stafford
Stafford always seems to find himself as a quarterback who isn’t a sexy pick, but will still get the job done. As long as the Lions ignore the running back position, Stafford’s role in their air-raid offense should see him putting up big points left and right.
10. Ben Roethlisberger
If only Ben could play all his games at home, as his passer rating on the road was a disaster last season. With weapons such as Le’Veon Bell, Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and the upcoming James Washington, it’s hard to imagine Big Ben won’t find himself in the top 10 in 2018.
11. Kirk Cousins
Cousins finds himself in what is thought to be a better situation in Minnesota with an upgraded RB/WR corps and one of the best defenses in the league. You like that? Expect to see Cousins continue to be a steady option in your league in 2018.
12. Cam Newton
Superman hopes to return to his 2015 MVP form as the Panthers offense looks ready to rebound in 2018. A healthy Greg Olsen and newly drafted D.J. Moore will be splendid additions to an arsenal with Christian McCaffery and others. Not to mention, Newton see’s a lot of goal-line touches as a runner.
13. Philip Rivers
It’s no secret that a healthy Keenan Allen is key to the Chargers offense being successful. Should Allen play all 16 and Mike WIlliams progress to his draft value, Rivers will provide a great value option in the later rounds of the draft.
14. Jimmy Garoppolo
The Jimmy G hype train is something else. There’s no doubting the talent is there and around him, but can he do it for a full 16-game season? He’s young, paid, and ready to prove he’s worth every penny.
15. Patrick Mahomes
Speaking of guys who will need to prove themselves, Mahomes has been given the keys to the Chiefs’ Ferrari of an offense in only his second year. Mahomes has looked the part thus far in preseason both through the air and on the ground, but the team will only go as far as Mahomes’ play will take them.
16. Alex Smith
Smith is quietly one of the better quarterbacks in the league, but was labeled as a “game manager” until his aggressiveness took over in 2017. Cousins was able to fare fine fantasy-wise in Washington, but with Guice out for the season the Redskins will look to rely on Smith’s arm for a majority of the time.
17. Jared Goff
We’ve seen the gradual growth of Goff, who was quickly written off as a bust after his rookie season. With newly acquired Brandin Cooks, Goff has a number one receiver to go along with Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp. There’s also that Todd Gurley guy to aid in the passing attack too.
18. Mitch Trubisky
The Bears are high on Trubisky, which might explain finding him a new offensive coordinator in Matt Nagy along with the likes of Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel and Trey Burton. With a strong running game paired with his new toys, the young Trubisky should continue to grow nicely in 2018.
19. Derek Carr
From looking like the best young quarterback in the league to looking extremely average, Carr has seen the rollercoaster of the league from the very front seat. I’m not high on Jordy Nelson replacing Michael Crabtree, so until Cooper can provide number one receiver help, we are essentially banking on last season being a fluke.
20. Marcus Mariota
Speaking of 2017 being a fluke, does anybody know what happened with the real Mariota? Aside from a reliable Delanie Walker, Mariota will have to rely on a big turnaround season from Corey Davis and Rishard Matthews to improve on handling business. Luckily Mariota is quite the shifty quarterback in the backfield, leaving room for easy points on the ground.
