It was the annual tilt between the New York Jets and Giants in Week 3 of the preseason. What can we takeaway from the “dress rehearsal” game this year?

The New York Jets played the New York Giants in Week 3 of the NFL preseason. This is commonly known as the dress rehearsal game, because the starters typically play the longest in this game.

The game started a-typically of a Jets game under Todd Bowles. The Jets won the toss and received. It was a head-scratcher, but resulted in a touchdown drive. So, it can’t be disputed.

There are a lot of things to unpack from this game. So let’s get right to it.

3. Penalties and special teams will kill this team

The special teams allowed a touchdown on a breakdown in punt coverage. Trenton Cannon fumbled a kickoff, and the team had penalties galore (one that directly cost them a point).

This is a three-phase game, and special teams was going to be important to the success of the Jets in 2018. They can’t set themselves back with miscues. Clearly the tactics in practice to prevent penalties aren’t working. However, it can’t all be on Todd Bowles. The players just need to be more disciplined, and it can’t be all on the coaching.
