Seattle Seahawks: 3 Big takeaways from Preseason Week 3
By Samuel Teets
A trio of pass rushers contributed
The Seahawks signed linebacker Erik Walden at the expense of defensive end Marcus Smith earlier this month. Smith was released in favor of Walden and the move proved profitable immediately. Walden recorded two sacks against the Vikings. He is a entering his eleventh season and has 35 career sacks. Eleven of them came in 2016 which was the best season of his career.
Walden is just the latest addition to a diversifying pass rush that is actually starting to look formidable, at least so far. Third year defensive end Branden Jackson also contributed on Friday, recording his first sack of the preseason. Rookie sixth round pick, Jacob Martin, also has a sack.
While Frank Clark and rookie Rasheem Green will most likely be the team leaders in sacks this year, plenty of other players will have the chance to get in the rotation and make plays. Jackson and Martin are both relatively inexperienced NFL players who still have room to grow. Martin especially, since he’s a rookie, should have the opportunity to see action this season.
The Seahawks finished tied for thirteenth in total sacks last season. They’re looking to improve from a middle of the pack team to being one of the most feared in the league. The last time the Seahawks finished as a team in the top 10 for sacks in the league, they won the Super Bowl.
