Chicago Bears: 3 Big takeaways from Preseason Week 3
We’ll have fun watching an aggressive Chicago Bears defense
Last season, the Chicago Bears were a top-ten defense. They have set their sights on an even higher ranking this season. General manager Ryan Pace added some young, athletic players to the roster through the draft. He also did a great job of re-signing not only key defensive players but also defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Fangio is considered one of the brightest defensive minds in the NFL. When he coached in San Francisco, he consistently had one of the best defenses in the league. Now he’s about to do the same in Chicago.
It was great to see an aggressive Bears defense again. Against the Chiefs, he ramped up the defense. They might not have gotten sacks (they had just two, but remember these were mostly the backups), but they put a lot of pressure on quarterback Pat Mahomes. While Mahomes used his elite athletic ability to escape from trouble, the attacking defense was a welcome sight. Perhaps with the starters in there they would get to the quarterback and not just miss him.
Kylie Fitts is one of the guys who actually got to the quarterback and record a sack. If he stays healthy he’ll be a great asset for Fangio and the Bears. Fangio loves having players move all over the field in different schemes. Fitts can do that. He has good ability but the injury bug keeps biting him. Hopefully he’s over that and he proves to be a valuable player for the defense.
Isaiah Irving, a player who’s perhaps on the bubble, had a good game. He recorded five tackles and had the other sack. He’s a returning player so this game might have saved him a spot on the roster as a rotational linebacker.
I think Fangio loves the players he has now. His blood will be flowing at the thought of how he can make these players succeed. It is amazing to think that a few months ago we weren’t sure he would come back. Now he’s about to take the defense to heights we haven’t seen in quite some time in Chicago.
