New York Jets: 5 Bold predictions for the 2018 regular season
2. Sweeping the Patriots
Given the success of Bill Belichick against rookie quarterbacks, it would be ridiculous to think a rookie quarterback would be able to lead the Jets to wins in both games against the Patriots, right? Well, this sweep won’t be a result of Belichick the coach dooming the Patriots, but Belichick the de facto general manager hurting Belichick the coach.
The Patriots defense was the epitome of what many call “bend but don’t break” defense in 2017. Despite giving up 5,856 yards (the fourth-most in the NFL in 2017), they only gave up 296 points (the fifth fewest). In the end, it’s really the points that matter the most.
Here’s the problem, though. The Patriots didn’t address their biggest issue in 2017, and that was their pass coverage. Yes, they didn’t give up a lot of points, but they gave up 24 touchdowns in the air, which was tied for 12th most in the league.
As noted earlier, Darnold has shown an aptitude, but he’s also shown a poise, and he’s shown that the stage isn’t too big for him. The Jets will keep the score close in both games against the Patriots, and he will get the ball last in both games, leading the Jets to touchdown drives culminating with touchdown passes to give the Jets both victories over the Patriots.
