2018 NFL Power Rankings: Concerns for Eagles following Week 3 preseason
By Dan Parzych
11. Kansas City Chiefs (9)
Coming up on the losing end to the Bears was definitely frustrating for the Chiefs since the team wants nothing more than to prove they’ll be just fine without Alex Smith, but at least Patrick Mahomes II continues to show potential. Moving on from an effective veteran like Smith to make way for a youngster like Mahomes was a risky move by Kansas City, but also keep in mind they never would have pulled the trigger if he didn’t look ready.
The Chiefs knew by trading up in the first round of the 2017 draft to land Mahomes that it would only be a matter of time before he officially took over the starting role under center, but nobody expected it to happen this fast. As long as Mahomes continues to help Kansas City be a legitimate contender in the AFC, it will make the whole Smith situation much easier to accept.
With weapons like Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce, Mahomes should have a much easier time adjusting to his first full season as the starter. If not, well it’s safe to say that some Kansas City fans will be left wondering if the team would have been better off holding off another year before replacing Smith since the team was already a strong contender with the veteran quarterback.
