Dallas Cowboys: Offensive line on the verge of collapse
By Joel W. Cade
Change offense or double down?
Much ink has been spilled about the Cowboys’ need to expand their blasé 1990’s style offense. It is no secret Dak Prescott struggles with ball placement. Outside of Michael Gallup, there is not receiver on the roster making a lot of noise. If the Cowboys were forced to play 2010s football, they would not stand a chance.
Instead, today’s NFL has more in common with a seven-on-seven competition than 1990s style football. This means the Cowboys will need to throw the ball to be successful. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have yet to show that they can be a pass-first offense.
One way to expand the offense would be to add RPOs to the offense. The Cowboys have not shown a willingness to use RPOs in the preseason — but it is the preseason. Come the regular season, RPOs would help scheme the Cowboys’ receivers open. Scheming players open would help Dak Prescott tremendously.
If the Cowboys are not going to expand their offense to keep up with the times, then they need to double down on offensive line depth. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones needs to be watching the waiver wire in a week. There may be some talent available. If so, Jones needs to act. The Cowboys season may depend on it.
