New York Jets: 2018 Season preview, prediction and more
Offense Preview
There are two major questions coming into the 2018 season. People believe the Jets offensive line is terrible, and they also believe that Darnold has no weapons around him. Let’s work both of the questions in order.
We can look at last year’s line and what we saw against Washington and jump to a lot of conclusions. Let’s just say that the game against Washington isn’t an indictment on the talent of the offensive line, but rather, the depth. Early on in the Week 1 matchup against Atlanta we saw some good things with all the starters in there. We also saw shades of Mike Shanahan’s zone concepts in the running attack. It worked well. So, maybe that’s a sign this offense is capable of more in that regard.
The second thing is about the “lack of weapons.” How many teams in the NFL have four wide receivers who have had an 800-yard season — the Jets. Also, both of their potential running backs have averaged at over four yards per carry for their careers. According to reports from camp, Darnold has also taken well to the playbook and is getting better day by day. He can scan the field and find the open man. So, maybe this offense is better off than people think.
Is this offense going to be a high-octane, high-powered offense? No. They will be a better one than people expect, though.
