Los Angeles Chargers: Cardale Jones

Imagine if Cardale Jones had entered the NFL Draft a couple of years ago after leading Ohio State to a National Championship instead of returning to school for another year since he was drawing interest form numerous teams at the time. Later on, Jones would go on to be selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft to provide some competition for the backup role to Philip Rivers, and nothing has changed since then.

Heading into 2018, Jones finds himself looking to make a case to be the backup for Rivers once again, only this time he faces different competition in Geno Smith. Football fans can say what they want about some of the struggles Smith has dealt with over the years, but the quarterback has provided some interesting competition in the preseason to make Jones worry about his job.

Maybe joining a team like the Chargers with a solid coaching staff was just what Smith needed to finally find an offense to fit in. Whether this means Smith will get to stick around, and Jones won’t, only time will tell. But since Jones hasn’t exactly done anything to set himself ahead of Smith, the Chargers quarterback may be out of luck earning one of the roster spots.
