1. Defense wins championships

It’s an old saying and easy to ignore because it’s said so often, but there’s a lot of truths to the cliché that defense wins championships. While it’s true that it’s an offensive-driven league anymore, teams can’t win enough games to contend if they don’t have a defense capable of making key stops at crucial points in the game.

For the Bears, they have that ability now. In fact, this could be their best chance at being one of the best defenses in the NFC North — or even the entire NFC.

We already talked about how Mack is joining with Kyle Fuller and Roquan Smith, but there’s still plenty of other playmakers on this roster. Defensive end Akiem Hicks, inside linebacker Danny Trevathan, and edge rusher Leonard Floyd could all be difficult for opposing offenses to gameplan against.

Vic Fangio will be able to work plenty of magic and has more than enough ammunition to get Chicago into the conversation for the best defense in the NFC.

It may not be time to reclaim the nickname “Monsters of the Midway,” but this team is headed in that direction. The rest of the NFC North has been put on notice.
