2. Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman

It’s a bit mind-boggling how often Mike Zimmer gets left out of the “best NFL coaches” conversation. Since taking over as the head coach of the Vikings, the club has quietly crept into the contender category while fielding one of the league’s most dominant defenses.

I’m sure Zimmer is just fine with his “underrated” status, though.

The only thing that likely matters to him is the fact that the Vikings are contenders again this season. He’s spent the last four years building this roster up to be one of the best and most well-rounded throughout the league. With the help of magician Rick Spielman, Minnesota is primed to continue contending for years to come.

For now, though, it’s been all about bringing out the best in the pieces Zimmer currently has in place. Just look at the defense for examples of his ability to mold potential into stardom. Everson Griffen was a fourth-round pick, and Danielle Hunter was a third-round pick — both are now star pass rushers. Xavier Rhodes has emerged as one of the NFL’s best cornerbacks, while Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks make up one of the league’s top linebacker duos.

It’s not just the defense, though. Spielman has helped put the pieces into place for the offense to be outstanding as well. He convinced Cousins to sign despite the New York Jets offering more money (via Vikings.com). He stole Stefon Diggs with a fifth-round pick. The fearless general manager deserves just as much credit for the Vikings’ current contender status.

Whatever comes Minnesota’s way in 2018, don’t expect Zimmer or Spielman to flinch. They’ll tackle the problem head on, ensuring that this club will dance in a sea of confetti on Feb. 3.
