New York Jets: Marcus Maye’s absence would be huge loss in Week 1
The first injury report has come out for the New York Jets, and the most notable player on the report was Marcus Maye, and why could effect the opener.
The New York Jets released their first injury report of the 2018 NFL season. There were three players that did not practice. Josh Marin is still dealing with a concussion, and Jermaine Kearse had a procedure on his abdomen (as reported by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News).
However there was one key notable absence from practice. Second-year safety Marcus Maye missed practice due to a foot injury.
According to various reports, what Maye is dealing with is unrelated to the surgery he had. ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote that Todd Bowles said it has been a recurring problem that has been “off and on.”
"Maye appeared with a foot injury that has bothered him “off and on,” said Todd Bowles, who wouldn’t specify when it occurred. Previously, Maye’s surgically repaired ankle was thought to be the reason why he missed so much camp time. The foot injury is unrelated to the ankle, per Bowles. Until now, it was assumed Maye was being brought along slowly with the opener as the target. That no longer is a certainty."
If Maye misses the game it will be a huge blow. Many expected the Jets to run a fair amount three safety looks with Jamal Adams in the box. Without Maye, that may not be the case, and it would be a drastic change in the game plan.
The difference Maye makes is more than just pure ability. His presence gives them more options in looks. So, if he can’t play, the defense will suffer, and more of a burden will be on the offense to shine in Detroit. So losing Maye could be a huge blow.
