The Kansas City Chiefs faced the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 9 in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.
One quarterback is just kicking off his career, another is trying to get his team to make a run as he enters the twilight of his career. 37-year old Philip Rivers and his Los Angeles Chargers hosted 22-year old Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season.
These two teams finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the AFC West last season with Kansas City edging the Chargers out with a 10-6 record compared to the 9-7 season for L.A. What doomed Rivers and his club was their 0-4 start to the season. They put it together after that, but if they want to have a shot at knocking the Chiefs off the top of the standings, they need to have a better start this year.
Tyreek Hill got things started quickly for Kansas City in this one. After the Chiefs defense forced a three-and-out for the opposing offense, Hill got things started with a bang as he took the ensuing punt return 91 yards to the house. After the Chargers put up a field goal, Mahomes and Hill connected on offense as the speedster scored on a monster 58-yard touchdown.
In truth, that really set the tone for the rest of the game. Rivers and the Chargers offense would get something rolling, but the Chiefs always had an answer. Hill was an absolute monster with 169 yards receiving and two receiving touchdowns, in addition to his return touchdown. What’s more, the KC defense stepped up numerous times as well.
Particularly at the end of the game, LA looked like they were trying to make some noise. However, they came up with big plays like a Ron Parker interception to ride the lightning and get the win in Week 1.

Hill continued his big day with a stroll into the end zone to extend the lead once again for Kansas City.
We could see the Chiefs and Chargers competing for the AFC West title this season. However, they both have to start somewhere, and that somewhere in 2018 is this Week 1 date.
