2018 NFL Power Rankings: Mahomes impresses, Rodgers plays magician

28. San Francisco 49ers (23)
Last season, the San Francisco 49ers went on a tear to end the season. They traded for Jimmy Garoppolo and the former New England Patriot backup came on late to win five games in a row. That led to the Niners giving him a five-year contract worth $137.5 million.
Huge expectations came with that deal, but some weren’t sold due to Garoppolo only having seven career starts. Still, he was 7-0 and had all the makings of a franchise quarterback. After one week, he’s 7-1 as a starter.
San Francisco went on the road and faced a tough test against the stout Minnesota Vikings defense. They were pressuring Garoppolo all day and it led to him throwing three interceptions with only one touchdown. He was also sacked three times and was just 15-of-33 passing.
It’s not a death sentence for Garoppolo or the team because Minnesota is a tough opponent. They were 13-3 last year and missed the Super Bowl by one game. The real worry is the Niners secondary. They weren’t great here and they’re counting on former Seattle Seahawks corner Richard Sherman to lead their unit.
They face Detroit next week at home and hope to have a rebound game.
