Oakland Raiders: 3 Players to watch vs. Rams in Week 1
By Joel W. Cade
Kolton Miller
The offensive line will be a major factor in the game. Raider’s fans should keep an eye on rookie left tackle Kolton Miller. Miller is making his first NFL and will be playing with a target on his back.
The Raiders offensive line is a position of strength. The interior is arguably one of the best in the league. However, the Raiders moved Pro Bowl left tackle Donald Penn to the right side to accommodate first round draft pick Miller. If there is any weak spot along the offensive line it is Miller.
Miller’s performance on Monday night will be critical. Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips knows there is a rookie starting at left tackle. He will want to test the rookie’s ability to protect the quarterback. Expect the Rams to show different looks designed to confuse Miller. Also expect exotic blitzes designed to overwhelm him.
The run game will see the same types of situations. The Rams give looks designed to make quarterback Derek Carr audible to runs on Miller’s side. The Rams will test Miller’s ability to big on big block as well as zone block. The Raiders will need to find a way to set up Miller for success in this area.
If Miller can have a big night at left tackle, the Raiders passing game may have a chance.
