Every week, we’ll look at how the 2018 rookies for the Los Angeles Chargers are performing. Let’s see how they look after their first game.

The Los Angeles Chargers started their 2018 season by welcoming the Kansas City Chiefs to the StubHub Center. They were looking to exorcise their demons of losing to the division rivals, but were unable to do so in a 38-28 defeat.

Looking through the 60 minutes of play to begin the season, there was plenty of both good and bad to take from the outing. However, every week, we’re going to focus the lens in a little closer on the Chargers rookies and see what they were able to contribute.

With that in mind, let’s take that look at the rookies following Week 1.

UDFA (On 53-man roster):

Brandon Facyson, CB

Made the roster, but was inactive for Week 1. All available corners appeared healthy and did the team did not need an extra cornerback. He’s earned his spot on the Chargers, but won’t get a chance to make the active game-day roster unless there is an injury.

Detrez Newsome, RB

Had a fantastic preseason, but did not register any snaps against the Chiefs. The team elected to use tight end Sean Culkin and fullback Derek Watt as blocking options with the usual starters, Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler, at running back. He will get his chance. In fact, due to the play of the following player on this list, he may just get a shot on special teams.

J.J. Jones, WR/KR/PR

Two kick returns for 36 total yards, one punt return for -4 yards and two fumbles, one of which was lost at the team’s own 6-yard line. Head coach Anthony Lynn pulled the struggling rookie in favor of Travis Benjamin, but stated that he’s not ready to give up on the rookie just yet. It was an awful game for Jones, one that cost the team both yards and points. This is a tough start for a guy who won the job in the preseason.
