New York Jets: 5 Big takeaways from win vs. Lions in Week 1
2. Quincy Enunwa is the security blanket for Sam Darnold
It’s commonly said that a young quarterback’s best friend is a good tight end. The Jets don’t have one that showed out in the preseason or against the Lions for that matter. The Jets may have something just as good.
Enunwa could be the matchup nightmare for defenses that many look for in the tight end position in today’s NFL. He’s undoubtedly too quick to be covered by linebackers, and he’s too strong to be covered by corners. He also showed YAC ability on his touchdown catch.
He’s also clearly becoming a favorite target of Darnold. He led the team in catches with six, and was the option Darnold clearly was most comfortable going to when the other options weren’t available.
The Enunwa to Darnold connection is something we’re going to see a lot of this season, especially if he’s as reliable as he was in this game. The Jets are deep at receiver, but in his Week 1 performance, Enunwa separated himself as the best of the group. If he stays healthy, there’s no telling where this offense can go. With a 21-year-old quarterback and this 26-year-old favorite target, this could be the making of something special.
