NFL Week 2, 2018: 5 Teams on upset alert
By Dan Parzych
4. Washington Redskins
After realizing they wouldn’t be able to bring back Kirk Cousins back for another season since it would be way too expensive to use the franchise tag for a third year in a row, the Washington Redskins decided to bring Alex Smith on board as his replacement. And if bringing on one of the NFL’s top game managers wasn’t already exciting enough, the Redskins also ended up signing Adrian Peterson in the preseason after Derrius Guice suffered a torn ACL.
It was only one game, but when seeing how good Washington looked in Week 1 during their big win on the road against the Arizona Cardinals, this team all of a sudden seems like they’re going to be a surprise contender in the NFC. One of the main reasons why the Redskins were so high on Smith in the first place was due to the fact that he would hopefully bring out the best in some of the younger players, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s guaranteed to happen.
Washington will enter Sunday’s game as a strong favorite agains the Indianapolis Colts, but Smith is going to need some of those younger receivers to step up. As great as it was to see Peterson lead the Redskins in both rushing and receiving in Week 1, the team doesn’t want to have to rely on that each week.
