Special teams:

Whoever wants to step up and be a legitimate return man

The Chargers were awful on special teams in their loss to a division rival. Sound familiar?

This week, the coaching staff should have a few options in the return game weighing on their minds. One, Benjamin will likely be out against the Bills, so he will not be able to field punts despite finishing as the return man in Week 1. Two, J.J. Jones is available for both spots, but played so poorly as both a punt and kick returner that he may have lost his job in just ten special teams snaps. And three: Give the ball to Detrez Newsome!

Please, Chargers’ coaching staff: Put the ball in the hands of the running back that beat out a draft pick, made the roster as an UDFA, and fielded a kick to set up your game-winning preseason field goal. He runs hard, he’s got a nose for extra yards, and can’t do worse than what Jones did last Sunday.

X-factor

Chris Landrum, DE

Here’s another Chargers’ preseason star whose snaps were remarkably low against the Chiefs. While Nwosu was at least understandably not used in the pass rush because he’s primarily an outside linebacker, Landrum is a true pass rusher on third down.

Bosa is not going to play due to complications involving a bone bruise, so getting a fresh rotation of an effective pass rush to combat his absence is key. I predict Landrum gets a sack in this one, and finally begins to fill the Chris McCain role from a season ago.
