2019 NFL Mock Draft: Ed Oliver, Nick Bosa fight for top spot
By Randy Gurzi
5. San Francisco 49ers: Deandre Baker, Georgia, CB
Week 1 didn’t go as planned for the San Francisco 49ers as they dropped to 0-1 against the Minnesota Vikings. It clearly wasn’t ideal and a lot of the discussion surrounding that loss looks at the play of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
He did have three interceptions in his first outing since signing his $137.5 million deal, but to be fair the Vikings defense is great. That could explain his issues in that one and he should get better moving forward.
Another area of concern in their loss was the secondary. The 49ers had no answers for the Minnesota wide receivers as Adam Thielen went for 102 yards and Stefon Diggs added 43 and a touchdown in the eight-point loss. They praised the signing of Richard Sherman all offseason, but he’s not looking like he once did.
San Francisco would be wise to re-work that secondary as soon as possible so they go for the top-rated corner in the draft here. Deandre Baker can flip a game in a hurry as he showed against South Carolina when the Georgia Bulldog took a pass back for a touchdown. He could shore up a lot of the problems the Niners have covering wideouts.
