8. Dallas Cowboys: A.J. Brown, Ole Miss, WR

Week 1 of the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver by committee experiment was a complete dud. They cut Dez Bryant in the offseason and saw tight end Jason Witten retire to take a job with ESPN on Monday Night Football. Rather than take a receiver early in this past draft, they decided to use a lot of players known more as complimentary pieces.

The result was ugly. Cole Beasley was the only one to do much damage as he had 73 yards on seven receptions. Deonte Thompson was the next most effective weapon with just three catches for 27 yards. In all, quarterback Dak Prescott completed just 19 passes for 170 yards.

This doesn’t mean they were wrong to move on from Dez. He was set to make roughly $16 million and no matter what the truth is about his talent level, he and Prescott were not getting on the same page.

Where the issue comes up is them not having a real backup plan. Maybe Michael Gallup ends up turning a corner, or perhaps another unknown player rises up from nowhere. Either way, Dallas needs something new on offense and in this mock, they luck out with Ole Miss wideout A.J. Brown being on the board.

He’s a legitimate No. 1 receiver and can help that offense — and they need some help for sure.
