Minnesota Vikings: 3 Big takeaways from gut-wrenching tie
By Randy Gurzi
1. Cousins is the truth
For some reason, the Washington Redskins were never sold on Kirk Cousins as their quarterback. In their long and storied history, the Redskins never had a quarterback do what he did in his lone three seasons as a starter. Cousins went for more than 4,000 yards in each of those seasons — a feat never before accomplished for their franchise.
He did so while playing under the franchise tag the last two seasons and then having a lack of receiving threats in his final year. To repay him, Washington traded for Alex Smith and let Cousins walk. He ended up being fine because he landed with Minnesota on a fully-guaranteed three-year $84 million deal. So far, he’s earning that. After leading them to a Week 1 win, Cousins went off in this comeback.
We already detailed all the yardage he had in hitting both Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, but he hit five other receivers as well. Spreading it out to these seven guys, Cousins had 425 yards passing and four touchdowns.
The rapport he’s shown with his new receivers is fantastic and he’s proving to be an upgrade over both Case Keenum and Sam Bradford who they had the past couple seasons as their starters.
Cousins is a legit starter and could very well be the player the Vikings needed to push them over the top. This tie hurt some since they were set up for the winning field goal in overtime, but at least they have a field general to believe in.
