The Kansas City Chiefs are off to a great start at 2-0. Despite that, if they want to continue their success, Kareem Hunt needs to be more involved.

Patrick Mahomes has been the breakout star of 2018. With that title, he’s led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 2-0 start. However, he can’t carry that burden all year long — and that’s where Kareem Hunt comes in.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m high on Mahomes — he’s definitely shown he can play in the NFL. That being said, he has 10 touchdowns compared to zero interceptions through two games. It’s simply not fair to expect him to play at this ridiculously high level all year long.

While Mahomes has been a revelation, the Chiefs running back hasn’t looked like he did in his rookie year. Hunt currently has 34 carries for 124 yards and one catch for five yards and one touchdown.

This is troublesome because not only was Hunt a beast running the ball last season, but was involved in the passing game. He ran for 1,327 yards and eight touchdowns on 272 carries, while catching 53 passes for 455 yards and three more touchdowns.

At the rate he’s going now, the 23-year old will run for only 992 yards and catch eight passes for 40 yards. Those numbers won’t add up to a lot of wins for the Chiefs.

Sure, the game plan is working at the moment, but at some point Kansas City will probably realize it would be good to use the talents of one of the best running backs in football. Getting Hunt involved in the passing game will free up other targets. At the same time, calling Hunt’s name more on run plays will force the opposing defenses to worry about him more often. Both will make life much easier for Mahomes.

Kareem Hunt was the Kansas City Chiefs offensive superstar last season. If they want to continue their early success, it would be wise to get him going again in 2018.
