14. Alex Smith, Washington Redskins (11)

Alex Smith and the Washington Redskins were all the rage after a Week 1 win against the Arizona Cardinals. The old-man connection of Smith and Adrian Peterson was supposed to make them threats in the NFC East. Then we all saw them play against a better team.

The Cardinals were bad in Week 2 and the reason Smith looked good — and Peterson as well — was likely due to that. To be fair to Smith, he wasn’t bad in the Redskins ugly loss, but he was his normal game-managing self. He wasn’t getting enough yards and drives didn’t end with touchdowns. The awful running back play didn’t help either.

13. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers (12)

Cam Newton is hard to figure out. The Carolina Panthers won their first game with him while scoring 16 points and seeing Cam have less than 200-yards passing. Then he comes out to throw it for 335 yards and the team loses.

This is a roller-coaster team and they need to find some sort of stability. They’re not the same team every week and they go from a great running offense that can’t pass to a passing team that can’t run. Newton is at the heart of that inconsistency and it’s frustrating because he has the talent to be in the top-5, but as of now, he isn’t in the top-10.
