2018 NFL Power Rankings: Packers, Patriots fall as Rams, Chiefs show dominance

25. San Francisco 49ers (23)
They started to make a run, but the San Francisco 49ers fell too far behind the explosive Chiefs to make it a game. After going 7-0 in his first seven starts, Jimmy Garoppolo is now 1-2 to start this season. It’s easy to point the finger at him and blame the team for giving him a mammoth contract, but there’s much more wrong with this team. And with him potentially being gone for a long time with a non-contact knee injury, that could be exposed.
The Niners still doesn’t have a go-to receiver. Marquise Goodwin is a weapon, but his best role is as the second receiver. Pierre Garcon used to be that for the Redskins, but he’s past his prime and hasn’t been the player they thought they were getting.
Then there’s the secondary. When an aged Richard Sherman — off a torn Achilles — is your top player, things aren’t great. That’s not to knock on Sherman, because he was amazing in his prime, but that injury took a step from him and he was never the fastest to begin with.
San Francisco was a preseason favorite to compete for a playoff spot, but that really made little sense. They have too many holes to fill. They’re headed in the right direction, but they’re not where people want them to be just yet.
Sadly, this whole season could be in jeopardy as Garoppolo was hurt late in the game — which he probably should have already been taken out of.
