Fantasy Football 2018: Waiver wire targets for Week 4
By Donnie Druin
Tight Ends
Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles
2018 stat-line: 8 receptions, 77 yards, 1 TD
ESPN ownership: 1.9 percent
Goedert, selected in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft, had a very slow start to his rookie campaign, amounting just one reception for four yards in his first two weeks. Yet Week 3 was the coming out party for Goedert as Carson Wentz returned for injury, and if last Sunday is the slightest indication of what the Eagles can do with an Ertz/Goedert tight end pairing, Goedert should find himself as yet another dangerous weapon on this Eagles offense.
The Eagles are no strangers to producing solid No. 2 tight ends, as now Chicago Bear Trey Burton had himself a solid season sitting behind Ertz. Perhaps the rookie is getting the benefit of a banged up Eagles receiving corps, yet Doug Pederson will find a creative way to the South Dakota State University product, as Goedert has already proven himself a valuable asset as a blocker. Goedert won’t put up gaudy numbers all season, but is certainly worth the pick-up should you be able to afford it.
Vance McDonald, Pittsburgh Steelers
2018 stat-line: 7 receptions, 138 yards, 1 TD
ESPN ownership: 12.9 percent
The tight end category in the waivers is truly slim, hence why I’m suggesting you claim a backup tight end in the above paragraphs. Now, I’m pointing the arrow to Vance McDonald after I suggested claiming Jesse James last week. Fantasy football is unstable, but not as unstable as the Steelers tight end room. After a career week, McDonald found himself a big part of the Steelers first win of the year, gaining 112 yards on 4 receptions while also adding a touchdown.
The problem with either James/McDonald is that both are unreliable to hit the proper amount of targets on a week to week basis, but since the depth at tight end is so top-heavy, grabbing one isn’t the end of the world. The Steelers do favor a healthy McDonald in the passing game, viewing Jesse James as more of a blocking/red-zone tight end. If there’s one tight end to grab from Pittsburgh, it’s McDonald.
