Oakland Raiders: Kolton Miller unprepared for epic battle with Myles Garrett
By Joel W. Cade
Clash of the demi-gods
Enter Myles Garrett. Calling Garrett a physical freak does an injustice to the concept of a physical freak. There are people like Garrett in this world, then there are the rest of us. Some people were created to be athletic specimens. In ancient days they called these people demi-gods. They are like a different breed of humanity…it’s like we’ve heard all of this before.
Garrett too was once a player with great physical ability, but little collegiate production. In his case, the lack of production was due to teams staying as far away from him as possible. SEC teams would rather somebody other than Garrett beat them on Saturdays.
The same trend is happening in the NFL. The Steelers could not stop him. The Saints slowed him down. The Jets ran everything and threw everything away from Garrett. Now the Raiders are asking Kolton Miller to slow down the Garrett train. Truth is, Miller is unprepared for this epic battle of NFL demi-gods.
Miller is not really ready for an average NFL pass rusher. Right now the Raiders keep a tight end to Miller’s side when calling drop back passes. They also have a running back staying in the help out on the left side. That is a lot of bodies focused on the left side of the line.
Given the issues at right tackle against the Dolphins and Donald Penn being replaced early, the Raiders may need to spread some of that help out to the right side as well. If that becomes the case, the Raiders may need to think about becoming a solely right handed team.
Garrett’s strengths as a player are his speed rush and bull rush. These are the types of players Miller struggles against. The Raiders are going to have to change the scheme to help out Miller.
This upcoming Sunday Kolton Miller will get a first class education in NFL football. It is the hope of Raiders fan everywhere that he rises to the occasion. They hope that he can become the legendary demi-god he was created to be. Raiders fans need to pray that he can stop the opposing demi-god Myles Garrett.
Derek Carr’s life may depend on it.
