The running back situation

Carson should get a healthy dose of carries against Arizona. It was his ability to grind up yardage and the clock last week that allowed the Seahawks to win. Considering how poor Arizona’s defense is, it seems like a prime opportunity to use Carson to support Wilson and the offense. There’s a good chance that Seattle will be carrying a lead into the latter part of the game as well and Carson would be a great, time-chewing offensive option.

It’s pretty clear now that Carson will be Seattle’s starter moving forward. There were some questions about whether rookie Rashaad Penny would assume more of the role after he out-carried Carson in Week 2. Then Carson more than tripled Penny’s carries in Week 3 and that put an end to the questioning.

But what will become of Penny now? It’s unusual for rookie running backs to have as few carries as he does, but at the same time he hasn’t done anything to earn more touches. There was a lot of talk about his versatility back when he was drafted, but he hasn’t even had a reception since Week 1.

If we see Penny in Week 4, I expect it will be in an extremely limited role. He might see two passes come his way and maybe carry the ball four times but that’s about it. There is a chance that Seattle comes in and just steam roles the Cardinals through three quarters and then puts their backups in late in the game, but I wouldn’t count on it. For now, it’s Carson’s backfield.
