1. Sam Darnold

All the talk around the offense has been about two things — the offensive line and the play calling of offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates. Sam Darnold is a rookie, but it’s time to put some of the blame on his shoulders.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. Darnold looks like, well, a rookie out there. He looks uncomfortable, and making a lot of mistakes. The mistakes he’s making though aren’t necessarily just because the offensive line isn’t giving him time.

He’s missing on throw downfield. He’s not just been inaccurate on throws downfield, but, like a rookie, he’s settling for easy throws rather than waiting for plays to develop. Darnold also bails out too quickly at times.

It could be a lack of confidence in the offensive line to hold up, which would be excusable. However, it could also be a lack of confidence in his own ability to make the plays downfield. If that’s the case, someone needs to get a hold of Darnold and find out why.

There are a lot of changes that need to be made for the team to find success sooner rather than later, and making sure Darnold is the guy they thought he was in April is at the top of that list. Pieces around him may make it hard to fully decipher, but he does need to prove himself still.
