Seattle Seahawks: 3 Big takeaways from win vs. Cardinals in Week 4
By Samuel Teets
Lots of questions at the running back position
Last week Chris Carson had over 100 rushing yards. This week Mike Davis, the third running back on the depth chart, matched the feat. Carson was inactive against the Cardinals because of a hip injury. Davis stepped in and carried the ball 21 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 23 yards. That is by far the best performance by a Seahawks running back this year. So who starts next week?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s better to have two running backs capable of reaching 100 yards than zero, but does this cause some controversy? I think Carson will still start next week if he’s healthy but if he struggles Davis could see some more reps. He should probably be getting more handoffs anyways.
However, the successes of Carson and Davis over the last two weeks leaves one man out in the cold. What role does rookie Rashaad Penny really have in the offense? The first round pick had nine carries against Arizona for 49 yards. That’s his best rushing performance so far, which isn’t saying much.
Penny has almost been invisible in the Seahawks first four games. He’s only has 29 carries this season and four receptions. That’s a far smaller role than I, and most Seahawks fans, envisioned for him. If Carson and Davis both raise their playing levels, will Penny lose the very few touches he’s already getting? I guess we’ll have to see what the Seahawks turbulent offense has in store.
