New York Jets: Rams coaching moves should be future guide
If the New York Jets want a good model on how to rebuild the coaching staff after they fire Todd Bowles, they should look to Los Angeles.
It’s commonly said that actions speak louder than words, but sometimes the words are so loud that they’re hard to ignore. The words coming from New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles are clearly screaming, “I’m in over my head! Let me out!”
It has now become inevitable, and probably something that’ll happen sooner rather than later. Bowles will at some point, whether it’s this week or by the end of the season, no longer be the head coach of the Jets.
All week, it’s seemed like people were ready to bury Bowles. However, he’s done it for you. Bowles has dug his own grave.
As Mike Vaccaro reported in the New York Post, here’s what he told the media after Sunday’s loss.
"“I don’t know why,” he said. “We ran that all week and we knew it was coming.”Uh …“I don’t know why we didn’t play well,” he said."
That’s the final nail in the coffin for his time in New York. Ironically, Jeff Fisher was calling the game on Sunday for FOX, and his tale seems to be the one that the Jets should follow.

The Jets drafted Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick and moved up to get him — similar to how the Rams got Jared Goff. When they paired him with Fisher it was an unmitigated disaster. Goff looked lost. Then the Rams hired Sean McVay, and the rest is history, but there’s another key element to the success of the Rams — Wade Phillips.
What the Jets need to do is hire an offensive minded head coach, and he must hire a defensive coordinator with complete control of the defense like Phillips has in Los Angeles, kind of like what the 1985 Bears did.
They also need to name the head coach they hire as the team’s offensive coordinator, similar to what the 49ers did. McVay is now the Rams offensive coordinator as well.
In the end, it’s all about the development of Sam Darnold, and the best way to do that is have a man in charge who has the mind for offense. The hot name seems to be John DeFilippo. No matter who it is, he must also be in charge of the offense moving forward. It’s time to clean house for the Jets, and it starts with the coaching staff.
