Geoff Swaim is not a bad tight end

A lot was made about the Cowboys not replacing Jason Witten this offseason. In their defense, they weren’t expecting him to leave as he unexpectedly took a job with ESPN just before the draft started. Dallas didn’t draft a tight end, and they also decided against making any moves in free agency even though players like Eric Ebron and Jimmy Graham were available — again, they still thought Witten would be there during that period.

More from Dallas Cowboys

While they could still use an upgrade, the doom and gloom about the position seems a little much now that we have five games in the books. That’s because Geoff Swaim has been pretty solid to this point. In Week 4, he got the first touchdown reception of his career and finished with 39 yards. On Sunday Night Football, he surpassed that total on his first catch.

Dallas set up a screen for Swaim, who took the ball and followed his blockers for a huge 43-yard gain. The drive stalled, but he set the tone by getting them in scoring range quickly.

While his ability as a receiver is underrated, the Cowboys like him because he can block. Swaim is the most complete tight end and serves as an extra tackle for them when on the field. Overall, he’s been much better for them than most guys selected as late as he was — pick No. 246 in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Now maybe the Cowboys can keep going to him when he’s playing well because they often forget about him when he’s rolling.
