The Seattle Seahawks played their best game of the season on Sunday, but fell just short of pulling out the victory.

The Seattle Seahawks came so close to winning on Sunday. Unfortunately, they fell just short, losing 33-31 to the undefeated Los Angeles Rams. Even though the Seahawks have fallen to 2-3 there were a lot of positive takeaways from the game.

In fact, this was probably the team’s best overall performance so far this year. It was certainly their most impressive performance since they were able to stand toe-to-toe with the NFC’s best team.

Having that in mind, let’s get into the three biggest takeaways for the Seahawks from Sunday.

More questions for the defense

The Seahawks defense held Todd Gurley, the best running back in the game right now, to just 3.5 yards per carry. The same defense intercepted Jared Goff twice, and yet Gurley had three rushing touchdowns and Goff threw for over 300 yards.

The Rams were also able to score 33 points, which usually means the defense played poorly. Yet by all measures, the Seahawks defense played pretty well. For the most part, they contained Gurley and they kept all the Rams wide receivers below 100 receiving yards. So was it a good performance or not?

Since the Seahawks were in the game until the end, the defense played well enough. Of course, if they’d held the Rams to below 30 points, Seattle would’ve won. That’s why it’s so hard to judge just how well the defense played.

Overall, the run defense played well but the pass rush was weak. The team failed to sack Goff all game long and only recorded two quarterback hits. Frank Clark did manage to intercept a tipped Goff pass though. As for the secondary, they left to many wide receivers open and struggled, as expected. However, Earl Thomas‘ backup, Tedric Thompson, did intercept another one of Goff’s passes.

It was just a mixed day for the defense.
