Free Agent Options

Let me be clear, neither of the following options are as enticing as the trade options, but Veach just signed Zombo, so there’s a foundation for this portion of the text.

Junior Galette (Outside Linebacker)

There have been, seemingly, thousands of Chiefs fans requesting Galette’s services since the beginning of the offseason. Why would anyone want a 30-plus-year old pass rusher?

The simple answer is because he would be better than some of the options on the roster currently. Sure, Houston and Dee Ford were solidified as the starting outside linebacker duo heading into the offseason and that never changed. However, the likes of second-year linebacker Tanoh Kpassagnon and rookie Breeland Speaks are not giving Chiefs fans anything to get overly “hyped” about.

Galette is not flashy and has been spotty throughout his career, but his pass rushing ability is undeniable and could still be of use to a team that needs pressure to cover up it’s obvious handicap in the defensive secondary.

As a sub-package and situational pass rusher for the Washington Redskins last season, Galette used his experience and shiftiness to gather three sacks, 14 tackles, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble last season.

Kelcie McCray (Safety)

Again, nothing flashy to be seen here, but this is guy that has spent time with Kansas City (2014) before and could bring a bit of tenacity to a soft secondary.

McCray, 30, has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Tamba Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks, and Buffalo Bills during his NFL career. He holds career totals of 65 total tackles and four passes defensed.

The former Arkansas State safety would likely come to Kansas City on a veteran minimum contract and would be a placeholder until the return of Daniel Sorensen from the injured-reserve list in the coming weeks, assuming he is healthy enough to return.
