Fantasy Football 2018: Start or sit for Week 6
By Donnie Druin
Start
Sammy Watkins at New England- The addition of Sammy Watkins has proven to be beneficial for all parties involved, whether it be Patrick Mahomes or even Watkins himself. Despite pulling a hamstring in Denver, three of the last four outings for Watkins has resulted in a minimum of 13 fantasy points. It’s easy to dissapear in a supporting cast of Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Kareem Hunt, yet Watkins has proven his worth in KC thus far.
The Chiefs will travel to New England to play in one of the most highly anticipated games of the season, a contest that is expected to be high-scoring. The Patriots secondary has been proven to be up and down this season, and with Watkins flashing some of his 2015 form, he could be in line for another productive night in potential shootout in New England.
Julian Edelman vs. Kansas City- I’ll stay in the realms of Sunday Night Football and highlight Julian Edelman as a must-start. After serving a four-week suspension, Edelman returned to the field and caught seven passes for 57 yards last week, proving to still be Tom Brady’s go-to guy. Edelman’s role should be expanded in what should be a pass-heavy gameplan.
The Chiefs defense currently ranks dead last in passing yards allowed, along with giving up nine touchdowns on the year thus far. The Patriots excel at getting their guys open, and the Brady to Edelman connection is almost a guarantee in life next to death and taxes. Start Edelman and trust Brady to do what he’s done his entire time with the wide receiver — get him the ball often.
Sit
Demaryius Thomas vs. Los Angeles Rams- Demaryius Thomas is just the latest victim of the ever-so dreaded inconsistency bug. After Thomas has hit over double-digit scoring in fantasy, his performances the week after have been forgettable (six points in both cases to be exact). Thomas will look to face a tough Rams secondary with Case Keenum at quarterback, not exactly an ideal quarterback in this situation.
The Rams defense makes almost any offensive player avoidable, but Thomas especially given his limited appeal to Keenum. Demaryius currently sits at 39 targets on the season, good for No. 26 at his position and trailing fellow Broncos receiver Emmanuel Sanders. The week after a big game hasn’t been kind to Thomas, and when you factor in his limited capabilities at quarterback against a tough defense, all of the above brews for a warranted sit in Week 6.
Corey Davis vs. Baltimore- Davis has become one of fantasy football’s most recent darlings thanks to his nine-catch, 161-yard, one-touchdown performance just two weeks ago. Davis, the first receiver drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, now finds himself finally settling into his number one receiver role with the Titans. The problem with Davis is his production will only go as far as quarterback Marcus Mariota will take it.
Davis enjoyed an exceptional week four merely because his quarterback was exceptional. Mariota, now back into a funk just one week later, will have the pleasant opportunity to face a Ravens defense that limited the Steelers high-powered offense to 14 points. Davis will see the likes of Marlon Humphrey and Jimmy Smith on Sunday, two of the best corners in the conference if not the whole league. Even if Mariota is able to return to form and consistently get Davis targets, I’ll trust the likes of Jimmy Smith to handle business.
