Following a 1-5 start, and a Thursday Night Football loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants have nothing to lose. It’s time to see what Kyle Lauletta can do.

The New York Giants have started off 1-5 this year, their lone win coming in Week 3 against the Houston Texans. Despite phenom running back Saquon Barkley, and the supremely talented Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants are anemic, almost unwatchable, on offense.

The defense is painfully average, and definitely part of the problem. Janoris Jenkins and Landon Collins are nice pieces, but the defense as a whole couldn’t stop a running faucet. An inept offense, combined with a tired defense have made for the fifth-worst turnover margin in the NFL. And yet, there is one massive problem at the center, and it happens to be under center. Time to rip the bandaid off.

Eli Manning is holding back the New York Giants, and he needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

Looking at the Giants schedule, and judging by how badly they’ve played so far, it’s hard to find more than one win left on the year. Big Blue might have a chance in Week 10 against the San Francisco 49ers, but that feels like the only winnable game. The Giants have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. It’s time to make the switch, and see what Kyle Lauletta is made of.

Coming out of Richmond, Lauletta was the draft community’s small school, analytics darling of 2018. The 6-3, 220-pound 22-year old was a star for the Richmond Spiders during his time there, and was considered by many to be a perfect prototype quarterback. The Giants took him in the fourth round, and he hasn’t seen the field since the preseason.

New York has nothing to lose, and everything to gain from giving the reigns to Lauletta. Not only are they benching their biggest problem in Eli Manning, but they are beginning a grand experiment for the rest of the season. Like any experiment, Lauletta could lead the Giants to two results. Both can pay dividends for Big Blue in the future.

In the event that Lauletta performs well, the Giants and their fanbase can rest assured they have their “guy” going forward. Eli can be phased out, ride into the sunset with his brother Peyton, and Giants fans have a huge reason to be excited going into 2019. The defense still needs work, so the Giants will likely still have a premium draft pick. This can be spent on defensive help, or fixing a struggling offensive line.

In the event that Lauletta performs poorly, well, at least the Giants tried. Now they know that Lauletta won’t cut it at quarterback, and can focus on drafting the next big thing.

Perhaps Oregon’s Justin Herbert or Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins (should they declare) can remedy New York’s quarterback woes. At least they can say that they tried with Lauletta, and we never have to wonder what could have been.

At the very least, Kyle Lauletta is worth a shot at the quarterback position. New York is, in principle, already out of the playoff race. This is a de facto tanking year for the Giants, and Eli is a shot fighter at this point. What’s the risk of playing Lauletta in a lost season? At least the Giants could say that they tried everything, before going all in on a quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft.
