The New York Jets finally have consecutive victories, but what can we takeaway from the matchup against the Indianapolis Colts?

It’s not quite as long as the losing streak of the Cleveland Browns, but it took the New York Jets 371 days to follow a win with another win. So, now we can breathe, until we realize they’re playing the Minnesota Vikings next week, and a three-game winning streak will be difficult to come by.

That said, let’s bask in the glory of back-to-back victories for the Jets before the likely crashing back to Earth happens in Week 7.

There’s a lot to chew on from this game. However, three things stood out from the Jets’ third victory of the season. So, let’s explore them.

3. The fifth-year option conundrum for Darron Lee?

Once the new year kicks of for the NFL in 2019, the Jets will have a lot on their plate. One of those things is whether to take on the fifth-year option automatically in the rookie contracts first round picks.

At the beginning of the year, some have said that this is the year that will tell the Jets whether or not he “deserves” the fifth year on his rookie deal. A good season does tell us they should apply the fifth-year option, but not because he “deserves” it, though.

The fifth-year option is precisely for a player like Darron Lee, not like one of the caliber of say Aaron Donald. Many teams will use the fifth year option as a tool to hold on to players for one more season, essentially giving the teams the rights to first round picks for potentially eight years (including any subsequent franchise tags) at a relatively cheap price. However, Lee’s situation — being a late bloomer — is precisely what the option is for.

Applying the option would give the Jets two more seasons to make sure he is what he’s shown this year. So, it’s not about him “deserving” it, but rather, the team needing more time to evaluate. If he keeps up the play that he’s shown this season, it’ll be a slam dunk.
