Cowboys run their way to NFC East lead

Last week was a sign of things to come for the Dallas Cowboys. As a team they ran for 4.9 yards per carry, and the two main cogs in the wheel — Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott — ran for a combing 5.7 yards per tote on 35 carries, which included 11 runs by Prescott.

Prescott found the formula for winning for him and the Cowboys last week. It’s clear that Prescott wants to stay in the pocket and be a pocket passer, but he need to use that athletic ability to keep teams honest and open things up for his receivers.

At 6-2, 238 pounds, he’s a big guy and tough to take down. Prescott needs to take advantage of that and run more with the football when the opportunity lends itself. The Cowboys don’t have a lot of weapons in their receiver core that scare people, but using Prescott as a running option will undoubtedly open things up downfield, and with his accuracy, if they open up, he will get it there.

He won’t put up prodigious passing numbers. In two of their three wins he combined for 343 passing yards and three passing touchdowns, but he added 127 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. The combo of Zeke and Dak will run their way to the lead in the NFC East.
