Many expected the Philadelphia Eagles to have something of a Super Bowl hangover after their shock win last year. But very few expected it to be quite this rough a journey.

Most teams have a Super Bowl hangover in the following season, unless, of course, you’re the New England Patriots. After having a terrific season ending on such a high note, the expectations of the following year can be too high to follow. It’s hard to be consistently great in sports, especially in football.

The Philadelphia Eagles currently exist in that stasis known as the Super Bowl Hangover. Right now, the Eagles sit at 3-4, second in their division. The NFC East as a whole has sputtered this year, with the Washington Redskins leading at 4-2. But, if progression and regression to the mean is to be believed, someone will eventually take over the division.

The Redskins looked great against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7, at least on defense. If Alex Smith can at least give the offense a little bit of juice, Washington could be well on their way to an NFC East title. The New York Giants are the only truly putrid team in the division, but everyone else seems to be rounding into form, with Washington leading the pack.

In which case, the Eagles are running out of time to round into form like the rest of the NFC East. On Sunday in Week 7, the defending champions lost to the Carolina Panthers in a game in which the Eagles led 17-0 in the fourth quarter. The Panthers stormed back with 21 unanswered points, leaving the Eagles under the .500 mark, about halfway through the season.

Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles are running out of time. In the NFL’s premier “glamor” division in which everybody seems to hate everybody, in a down year, the Eagles are 3-4. The second half of the season is brimming with divisional games for Philly, so the Eagles still have time. But, the record doesn’t say it all.

Despite being one of the most talented teams in the NFL, the Eagles have looked mediocre throughout the whole season. Wentz is leading the charge and has thrown ten touchdowns (and just one interception) since his return, but the Eagles defense hasn’t helped their case at all. In Week 4, Philly’s defensive unit gave up 10 fourth-quarter points to the Tennessee Titans, who are one of the worst offensive teams in the league this year.

The Eagles are having a Super Bowl hangover, and that’s okay. Nearly every team goes through them, and the Eagles are second in the division. Doug Pederson and his crew still have some time to get on a roll, and Carson Wentz is still one of the league’s best quarterbacks, but the clock is ticking. Time to see what the Eagles can do when the pressure is really on this season.
