Derek Carr: 5 Possible destinations ahead of NFL Trade Deadline
New York Giants
The writing is on the wall. Father Time has caught Eli Manning, and it’s time to call it quits. Whether it’s Manning on his own or the Giants cutting him, he will not be with Big Blue in 2019. So, the Giants need a successor.
They could’ve drafted his successor in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, but they chose to get a dynamic playmaking running back — Saquon Barkley — instead. With the expectations of the 2019 NFL Draft being what they are, it may behoove the Giants to land a veteran quarterback to be the heir apparent to Manning.
By cutting Manning — which is the most likely scenario — the Giants will save $17 million in cap space in 2019. They also have over $10 million in cap space for this season. So trading for Carr now won’t put them over the cap.
The Giants don’t have a third round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft due to taking Sam Beal in the third round of the 2018 Supplemental Draft, but they do have two fourth round picks. So, they have seven picks at the moment. If the price is right for Carr, they should trade for him and set up the succession plan for 2019.
