Fans of the New York Jets want Todd Bowles fired, but that comes with a buyer beware warning, not because of the talent of the coaches they want, though.

It seems like an annual rite of passage, fan bases are calling for coaches to be fired. Fans of the New York Jets are not immune to that, and many are calling for the head of Todd Bowles. However, one phrase comes to mind when it comes to call for the head of Bowles to roll — caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).

Some have called for Bowles to be fired without giving names of who they’d replace him with. However, some have given names.

The most popular names seem to be Vikings offensive coordinator John Defilippo, Browns offensive coordinator Todd Haley, Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw and Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley — all of whom have an offensive background.

There are two problems though. What if, like Shaw, the coach doesn’t want to be an NFL head coach? Shaw told Howie Kussoy of the New York Post that wasn’t his ultimate goal.

"I’ve coached at that level. I’ve worked with All-Pro guys and Hall of Fame guys, and I’ve coached in every game except for the biggest one, so it’s not like, ‘OK, that’s my goal and I have to get there.’ My goal is to do great things at Stanford. If one day that happens, great, but it’s not a goal in my career to do that."

That could be a concern, but there’s an even bigger concern that Jets fans should take into account. It’s not always that they don’t want to be NFL head coaches — like Shaw seems to be content at Stanford. Sometimes, they don’t want to coach in a particular place.

Jets fans throw out the top names. However, they may not want to come to the Big Apple in the first place. And given the vitriol of the fan base, you can’t blame them if they don’t.

You can say the Jets should fire Bowles and bring in a top offensive minded coach. That’s easier said than done, however. Even if the Jets try to do that, it may not happen. So be careful what you wish for, because it just may not fall into place the way you want it to.
