New York Jets: Early top 5 free agency targets for 2019
3. Ziggy Ansah, EDGE
If Ziggy Ansah were younger, he’d be much higher on this list. He might even be No. 1 if he were of similar age to the final two players on this list, but since he’s going to be 30 years old by the start of the season, he doesn’t fit the youth movement. He’s also dealing with an injury which will diminish his value.
With all of that said, he’s still a quality edge rusher, and that’s what the Jets need the most on defense. Ansah would give the Jets the best pass rusher they’ve had in a long time. His career Pro Football Focus (subscription required) pass rush productivity — which measures pressure rate by percentage — is 10.2 with 249 career pressures (45 sacks). With 58 tackles for loss, he also provides them with support in the running game.
Ansah combined with the another edge rusher would add another dimension to this Jets defense, and even though the coverage has been inconsistent in 2018, adding pass rush would make this coverage so much better.
Ansah may have a limited amount of time to be a dominant pass rusher, but he has enough time while Darnold is still on his rookie deal to help the Jets defense. He’s precisely what they need if they can’t land one of the top two players on this list.
