Philadelphia Eagles: Nelson Agholor, players to watch vs. Jaguars in Week 8
By Carl Naimoli
1. Nelson Agholor
One of the players who needs to step up and make a difference on the field is wide receiver Nelson Agholor. Agholor had a nice start to the season in the absence of the Eagles top receiver Alshon Jeffery.
Agholor had 20 receptions and a touchdown through the first three games without Jeffery. In the four games since Jeffery’s return, however, he only has 18 receptions and hasn’t been able to find the end zone.
The Eagles are clearly missing a number two receiver option in the offense. The only players that Carson Wentz seems to trust are Jeffery and tight end Zach Ertz. Agholor needs to add himself to that list if the Eagles want to have more success on offense.
Agholor obviously feels more comfortable as the teams slot receiver rather than playing on the outside. Teams are picking up on the fact that the Eagles don’t have any deep threats outside of Jeffery. Agholor has the speed and quickness to go deep, yet we haven’t seen that connection often.
Agholor’s 8.5 yards per reception are third lowest in the NFL among wide receivers. He clearly hasn’t gotten downfield enough. The Eagles are going to need to get some big plays out of him. If not, teams will continue to stack the box as they see no deep threat in this Eagles offense. The emergence of Agholor will be key if the Eagles want their offense to open up and look like the offense of 2018.
