The Cleveland Browns have fired head coach Hue Jackson after a historically bad tenure, but who could be called upon to replace the forever blameless one?

The Mother of Mercy has smiled upon the Cleveland Browns, though probably well after the point where she should have. After going 3-36-1 over the last 2.5 seasons as the head coach of the team, Hue Jackson has been fired, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

While there is a human element to this as a man lost his job, there is the football element of it all where you have to wonder how Jackson still had it to begin with. Coming into this season, Jackson had achieved one victory in 32 opportunities over the previous two years. For those who don’t want to do the math, that’s a success rate of 3.125 percent.

There should be no job, no matter the circumstances, where a success rate that low is acceptable. Yet, the Browns organization and Jackson alike continued to make excuses for the lack of wins and he maintained his job coming into this year. As the disappointments piled up, though, the excuses continued.

As recent as Sunday prior to the Browns’ second meeting of the season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, there were reports that offensive coordinator Todd Haley could be fired as the apparent fall guy. That, however, seems untrue as it’s Jackson who got the axe in the end. At some point, the Browns wised up and stopped buying the ocean-front property in Iowa that Jackson was selling.

Now the Cleveland Browns are left to head into a new era both in terms of roster and now in terms of a head coach. There are a number of directions they could go as they try to guide a talent-rich roster to wins moving forward.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at five options for the Browns now-vacant head coaching position in the wake of Hue Jackson being fired.
