Baltimore Ravens: Ty Montgomery trade answers big need
The Baltimore Ravens traded for Ty Montgomery ahead of the 2018 NFL Trade Deadline, giving them a necessary weapon at running back.
The Baltimore Ravens started out the 2018 season looking quite formidable, beginning with a 3-1 record and looking quite dominant in the process. However, they’ve since lost three of their last four games, all three against playoff-caliber teams when they needed to prove themselves. Thus, they’re now 4-4 and searching for answers, which is where they hope Ty Montgomery will come into play.
As reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Ravens have traded for Montgomery, sending the Green Bay Packers a 2020 seventh-round pick in return, ahead of Tuesday’s NFL Trade Deadline at 4 p.m. ET.
Montgomery has been in the news coming out of Week 8 after his special teams fumble and overall blunder cost the Packers a final possession to try and hand the Los Angeles Rams their first loss. With reports coming out of Wisconsin that the locker room had soured on Montgomery, it’s not surprised that the Packers were willing to move on at such a low price.
For the Ravens, however, Montgomery can give them something they don’t have. For one, he gives them another viable option at running back as Alex Collins and Javorius Allen have both struggled in that regard this season. Moreover, Montgomery’s background as a receiver gives them a notable upgrade as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
There’s no question that the backbone of this Baltimore team is one of the league’s best defenses. Having said that, their offense has shown flashes of improvement from last season. Even still, they’ve been inconsistent, highlighted by the lack of weapons on the roster.
While Montgomery may not be the most reliable of players, he does give the Ravens another useful option on offense. For a team that’s in the thick of the AFC North and playoff race at midseason and for the low price that they had to pay to acquire him, this is a good deal.
And, if nothing else, maybe Baltimore will have the wherewithal to keep a running back from wearing No. 88.
