27. Raiders acquire Mike Haynes

Speaking of the Oakland Raiders, isn’t it amazing to look back at some of the big trades this organization has made throughout the course of their history?

As mentioned before, there’s a good chance the deal involving Khalil Mack will be one of those trades where the Raiders look back wondering if they made a mistake giving up such a talented defensive star. However,1 at least another deal in the 1980’s involved the complete opposite, as they were on the receiving end of star cornerback Mike Haynes.

Prior to the start of the 1983 season when the Raiders were in Los Angeles, the defense was in need of some help. Even though it wasn’t cheap to acquire Haynes from the New England Patriots, it was well worth it.

Giving up the No. 1 pick in 1984, along with the No. 2 pick in 1985 would be tough for any team to accept. Seeing how it allowed Haynes to team up with Lester Hayes to arguably give the Raiders one of the top cornerback duos in football, it’s easy to understand why the move was made.

During that amazing 1983 season, Haynes would play the final five games of the regular season before eventually helping the Raiders go on to win Super Bowl XVIII 38-9 over the Washington Redskins. this was just the beginning of an epic career in Los Angeles for the cornerback.

Along with winning the Super Bowl, Haynes would go on to have an amazing seven years as a member of the Raiders . It consisted of 18 interceptions and it would even help him get elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame down the road in 1997.
