The New York Jets are going to have to use the 2019 NFL Draft to build around Sam Darnold. They will need to start with the offensive line.

The New York Jets finally have their franchise quarterback. Now it’s time to build around him. In today’s NFL it’s not only about the draft, but how teams do in free agency. That said, the Jets need to upgrade the offensive line.

The current offensive line has been inconsistent in 2018. It starts at left tackle. While Kelvin Beachum has had a decent season, they do need to upgrade there, because he’s allowed a little too much pressure on the blindside of Darnold.

According to the webstie Tankathon, the Jets currently sit outside the top-10. In order to get one of the top-flight offensive tackles in this draft they will have to move up. It’s a good thing the Jets have two third round picks, because they may have to use both to move into the top-10 to acquire one of the top two offensive linemen. Then again, they may not.

If they were to need to do so, however, it would be contingent upon their plans for free agency. As stated in a previous piece, the Jets have cap room to burn and big targets to go after. Thus, to be able to make a trade up in the NFL Draft, they need to land two edge rushers, Le’Veon Bell and Randall Cobb in free agency — a long-shot, but a plausible one.

It will cost them future draft considerations, though, and Mike Maccagnan can work out a deal like he did for Darnold — where he didn’t give up a first round pick this year — that would be ideal. Getting the left tackle of the future is crucial for this draft, because there isn’t any talent at that position in 2019 free agency.

Unfortunately for the Jets, they will have to maneuver themselves into the top-5 to ensure getting a top lineman, because this class isn’t as stacked as last year’s was. Who are the two players the Jets should target? Let’s find out.
