2019 NFL Mock Draft: Raiders rule post-Trade Deadline, Browns land playmaker
By Randy Gurzi
5. Arizona Cardinals: A.J. Brown, Wide Receiver, Ole Miss
The Arizona Cardinals are a mess this season and it’s not easy to pin that on one person. That’s because there are so many not playing up to expectations.
One player who doesn’t fall into that category is edge rusher Chandler Jones. To date, Jones has recorded 6.5 sacks and is the lone bright spot on this roster. If you ask thin though, he’s not doing enough.
"“I’m the type of player that’s putting it all on me. A lot of plays I left out there. Some people can say I’ve had a decent season. A lot of times when you talk about Defensive Player of the Year, which ultimately should be every defensive player’s goal, when you talk about things like that, one of the biggest factors is, what’s the team’s record. How is he helping the team win? What is Chandler Jones doing to help the team win? Right now, at 1-6, I’m not doing enough.” — Josh Weinfuss, ESPN"
The truth is that the team isn’t winning because he’s had no real help. There are several draft busts on the defensive side and on offense, they need some huge strides out of players like Josh Rosen and Christian Kirk to become competitive.
While getting Jones help on defense would be nice, an even better use of their draft position would be to get Rosen someone who can hold onto a pass. That’s where Ole Miss receiver A.J. Brown comes in. The Running Rebels receiver was already high on most draft boards but could increase his stock even more. Fellow pass-catcher D.K. Metcalf was looking like a top-10 talent, but a neck injury ended his season. The extra targets for Brown could make him look even better to finish this season and land this high with the Cards.
