NFL Week 9: Steelers, Saints leave winners, Packers losers on Sunday
Loser: Poor, poor Nathan Peterman
With Josh Allen still inured and Derek Anderson in concussion protocol, the Buffalo Bills again had to lean on Nathan Peterman to lead the offense. The second-year quarterback clearly has not exorcised any of his demons as he went out and had another abysmal, interception-filled outing, throwing three on the day.
While Peterman did account for the lone Bills touchdown of the day with his legs, he is essentially damaged goods at this point. Not that anyone was thinking that the sophomore player would be the next Jim Kelly in Buffalo given the start to his career, but he may not even be a serviceable backup at this point. In truth, it may be time to just cut ties. Throwing an interception every 10.8 attempts just won’t cut it.
Loser: Pretty-dead-now Cleveland Browns hype
The first game of the post-Hue Jackson era for the Cleveland Browns had some positivity around it. Though there’s not a lot of faith in Gregg Williams to be found as the interim head coach, getting away from Jackson is a positive thing. Against the vaunted Kansas City Chiefs, Baker Mayfield and the Browns offense showed real life and, though it resulted in a 16-point loss, Cleveland acquitted themselves well for most of the game.
While that all is true, the hype that surrounded the Browns coming into the year is officially dead. There are major issues on the offensive line that cripple the offense at times. What’s more, the defense has tremendous top-end talent, but they don’t have the depth to succeed for a 16-game season at this point, which was evident against KC’s high-octane attack. Put simply, the rebuild continues on.
