I tried so hard not to be “that guy” this week, yet with limited options at the quarterback position in Week 10, Nick Mullens finds himself in this week’s waiver wire finds. Mullens, who was announced as the team’s starting quarterback just hours before the team’s TNF game against the Oakland Raiders, took off with his first career start and had one of the most memorable mid-season debuts to memory.
Week 10 offers a matchup at home against a New York Giants defense that is middle of the road in pass coverage (16th in the league with 244 passing yards per game allowed) while ranking second to last in sacks, only recording ten on the season. Mullens’ film study only offers one career start in the league, still leaving a gap of mystery for the Giants to deal with. Can Mullens replicate his week nine magic?
Baker Mayfield vs. Atlanta
2018 Stats: 159/265, 1,768 yards, 10 TD, 7 INT, 40.9 QBR
ESPN Ownership: 38 percent
A few weeks ago, I had mentioned Mayfield’s fantasy schedule as one filled with optimism due to pass-friendly defenses along with his reliable fantasy football floor in terms of points scored. Through three games against the secondaries of Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and Kansas City, Mayfield has averaged a shade over 20 fantasy points per game. With head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley now out of the picture, Mayfield’s offense has turned into a friendlier one that is tailored to his strengths.
Week 10 brings on a banged up Falcons secondary that ranks in the bottom four of pass defenses (304 passing yards allowed per game). In a game where the Browns will very likely need to keep up with the high-flying Falcons offense, game-flow would tend to favor Mayfield and his numbers.
Mayfield has yet to truly have himself a great statistical game, but has provided a solid floor of fantasy points for owners to work with. Mayfield isn’t necessarily a “safe” pickup due to his turnovers, yet he’s shown himself to be an at worst average fantasy quarterback off the waiver wire.
